EU and Africa Launch $5B Cross-Continental Green Power Grid Initiative
2025.03.19

BRUSSELS – The European Union (EU) and the African Union (AU) jointly announced a $5 billion initiative on Wednesday to build a cross-continental power grid linking renewable energy projects in Africa to European markets, aiming to accelerate decarbonization and energy access across both regions.

Named the “Green Interconnector Partnership,” the project will prioritize constructing high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines connecting Morocco’s solar and wind farms to Spain, and Kenya’s geothermal plants to Greece via Egypt and Turkey. The grid is designed to transmit up to 10 GW of clean power by 2035, supplementing Europe’s renewable energy capacity while creating revenue streams for African nations to expand domestic electricity access.

“Africa holds 60% of the world’s renewable energy potential but only 2% of global installed capacity,” said AU Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy Amani Abou-Zeid. “This grid will turn our natural resources into shared prosperity—powering African homes and businesses while helping Europe meet its 2030 climate targets.”

The EU will contribute $2.5 billion in grants and low-interest loans, with the remaining funds to come from international financial institutions and private investors. A joint task force will oversee feasibility studies, set to conclude by late 2026.
